MySpace Gears up for More Music with Transmissions

In effort to distinguish itself amongst the competition, social networking website MySpace (News - Alert) has introduced a suite of services and initiatives as part of MySpace Music 2.0.

The company has introduced Transmissions, which features video of participating artists in the MySpace studios, performing select songs and conducting interviews. MySpace has the exclusive rights to stream of both these events.

MySpace VP of marketing and content Josh Brooks said in a Reuters report, “Whether it's a widget or a click through (to another site), as long as it's easy to use, I don't think anybody is going to complain. At a time when people are trying to figure out what the secret sauce is to break bands, giving people a taste of the music is needed. They need it, and want it before they make a commitment. So I don't think free streaming is an issue.”

MySpace traffic has been mostly promotional until now as the company has been pressured by artists and companies to enable users to buy songs through MySpace.

Links will be provided to the users to buy the music of the all featured Transmissions artists.

The first artist to be featured on this program is James Blunt, who recorded new versions of five previously released songs for the site. Fans can watch the video and buy the complete exclusive bundle or stream individual tracks the same sales widget from digital music provider Lala.

The company is also looking to enter into more partnerships for ad revenue-sharing with different labels.

MySpace and Sony BMG have already entered into such deals for streaming music videos and some audio tracks. But there is a roadblock asUniversal Music Group ( News - Alert) (UMG), has introduced a new policy limiting full-song streaming on the site. The company is reportedly concerned that unlimited, free on-demand streaming of full songs online will substitute for users buying the track or the album.

Several band profiles on MySpace have been hacked to serve up some nasty tricks, according to security vendor FaceTime Communications.

The bands' MySpace pages have a transparent overlay that, when clicked, either links to a Web site that tries to start downloading malware disguised as a media codec or attempts to exploit a browser security flaw, said Chris Boyd, security research manager with FaceTime.

When a cursor passes over part of the overlay, the IP (Internet Protocol) address for a Web server in China is shown in some browsers. However, the fake media codec site is hosted in Russia, Boyd said. He posted screenshots of the problem on his blog Wednesday.

At some point, the log-in details for the bands' pages must have been obtained, likely through a phishing attack, Boyd said.

"So far, I think we've seen around seven or eight music bands hacked -- not a huge number as it seems to be pretty fresh," Boyd said.

But if the hackers have the bands' log-in details, they can send bulletins to users who have joined the site as friends. Those bulletins are used to attract more people into visiting the infected pages and potentially downloading the malware. That could ramp up infection levels, Boyd said.

"It's a great hook for a malware writer to tap into," Boyd said.

MySpace officials could not immediately be reached for comment. Boyd said the company has been notified by FaceTime via e-mail.

It's been quite the week for beating press releases to the punch. Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that Google's much-hyped Open Social project is preparing to announce a new partner -- MySpace.

If the rumor has legs, then this could mean that Facebook's platform may be on the verge of seeing some serious competition. MySpace already has more active subscribers than Facebook, and a partnership of this size could tip the balance for developers looking to get their apps in front of the largest audience with the smallest development time.

The real question is whether or not this rumor actually has legs. After tapping a reliable source close to the Open Social project we were told that it "has a lot of legs." But if it's true, will it change anything that's going on with the platform MySpace said it was working on at the Web 2.0 Summit? More as it develops later on today!

I found this when I was hopping through the net or better say when I was googling. Not at all a clean interface. To much of a mess. May be they are not fully launched thats why they are not completely ready. Many features are not available yet. It says of have a full launch on 11th of June, 2007. Hope it come in the much required competition. Well, this website does not provide any invite link. The invite system is very tricky and as far as i know not even a full proof also. They simply ask for writing the username of the person who have invited you. Well, lets see what happens soon................

Many schools and other institutions have blocked access to MySpace because they believe that MySpace is bad. Well, the Internet is a democracy and you have the right to view any website you want. If your school or work has blocked MySpace, don't worry because there are ways to easily get around it. To access MySpace from a blocked location, try one of the following:

# Setup an SSH Tunnel.

# Use Google Translator.

Use a Proxy. A proxy allows you to view a site without the network being aware that you are viewing the site. There are many proxy services out there, just do a google search for proxy to find them. I've had the best luck with the following:

Try using circumventor, a program that gets around the site filter.

Go to the hottest girl you know and ask her to find your network administrator (they are usually lonely geeks). Tell her to flirt with him and seduce him into removing the network restriction that is keeping you from accessing MySpace. Ha!

Put YouTube Videos on MySpace Profiles

MySpace made a few changes to the way they handle YouTube videos that makes the process of adding video to your MySpace Profile page a little easier. At the same time, it's a slightly more confusing process than my previous method for adding YouTube videos to your MySpace blog. MySpace automatically changes the YouTube video embedding code to fit MySpace requirements, so you need to make sure you add the autoplay information in the right spot if you want a video to start automatically on your MySpace profile home page.

To add a YouTube video to your MySpace profile page, make sure you're logged into MySpace. Click on the Edit Profile link next to your photo.

For this example, I'll add a video at the bottom of my About Me section. First copy the embed code from the YouTube video page.

Next, scroll down to the bottom of your About Me section and paste the code you just copied from YouTube.

If you don't need the video to start playing automatically, you are finished at this point. Click the Save All Changes button at the top of the page and your video will appear on your profile.

To make the YouTube video start automatically, you need to do one more step. Locate the section of the YouTube that says value="http://www.youtube.com/..." where ... is the rest of the URL. Before the closing quotation mark add &autoplay=1 to the end of the link. Now click Save All Changes and the video will be on the front page of your MySpace profile, starting automatically.

First click in the box in the About This Video section where YouTube has the Embed code. This automatically selects all the code in the box.

Either use Ctrl+C on the keyboard or right click this box and select Copy to copy the code.

After logging into MySpace, click on the link to your Blog below your profile photo.

On the Blog page, click the link to Post New Blog on the left hand side.

Add a Subject for your post. Click the link that says If you can't input your Blog, click here. This is an important step because it keeps MySpace from messing with the YouTube Embed code.

Paste the Embed code from YouTube in the Body section of your blog post by either using Ctrl+P or right clicking and choosing Paste from the menu. Delete everything before

You should only have the equivalent of what's highlighted in the screenshot below:

Click Preview & Post to make sure the video is there, then click the Post Blog Button.

There are so many things that should be easier on the MySpace site, I don't even know where to start with the complaints. Fortunately, once you know where to look, deleting a friend from MySpace is relatively easy.

Start by signing in to MySpace. From your Home, look for the link above your My Friend Space that says [Edit Friends]

On the Edit Friends page, check the box next to the friend you want to remove and then click the Delete Selected button.

There is no confirmation for delete friends. As soon as you hit that button, the friend is gone.

I've been messing around with TuneFeed lately and I'm very impressed how easy TuneFeed makes it to share your mp3 and other music files. All you have to do is upload the files to TuneFeed, create a playlist, and copy a little bit of script into your layout and voila! You can share all of your favorite mp3s on your myspace profile with TuneFeed. The player that it embeds in your profile is nice looking and easy to use.
